Questions about ATS and your CV

How employer software (ATS) reads a CV, and how to write one it reads well.

What is an ATS?

ATS stands for applicant tracking system. It is the software many employers and recruitment agencies use to collect the CVs sent for a job, read them and put them in order. When you apply online, an ATS often reads your CV before a person does.

How does an ATS read a CV?

It takes the text out of your file and sorts it into sections by their headings, such as Experience, Education and Skills. Then it looks for the words and skills the job asks for, and for the dates of each job. It cannot read words inside a picture, and it can mix up a CV set out in two columns. A CV it cannot read well is ranked low, however good the candidate.

What is an ATS-friendly CV?

A CV that employer software (ATS) can read from top to bottom without losing anything. Use one column and plain headings such as Experience, Education and Skills. Use real text, not pictures of text. Give a start and end date for every job. Use the words from the job advert where they are true for you. Keep it to two pages, and save it as a PDF named after you, such as Nimal-Perera-CV.pdf.

Do employers in Sri Lanka use an ATS?

Many employers that take applications online use one, and so do many recruitment agencies. Even when a person reads every CV, the things that confuse employer software (ATS), such as columns, pictures of text and missing dates, also make a CV hard for a person to read quickly.

Is this ATS CV checker free?

Yes. Checking your CV is free, and you do not need an account. Upload your CV as a PDF and you get a score out of 100, what lowered it and the fixes to make first. BetterJobs AI also writes your personal advice, a stronger summary and a cover letter.

What does my CV score mean?

70 or more is green: your CV is in good shape for employer software (ATS). 50 to 69 is amber: it works, but the fixes in the report will help. Below 50 is red: parts of your CV are likely to be lost, misread or ranked low. The report shows what lowered your score and how to raise it.

Is it made for Sri Lankan CVs?

Yes. It was built and tested with real Sri Lankan CVs. It reads O/L and A/L results, Sri Lankan phone numbers and towns. It also names the habits that cost Sri Lankan CVs marks: a photo; an NIC number, religion or civil status; every O/L subject once you have a degree or a job; and three or four pages.

Can I check my CV against a job advert?

Yes. Choose the role you want, paste the job advert, or do both. The report then shows which words and skills from the advert your CV already has and which are missing, and how well your experience fits the role.

How accurate is this ATS check?

Its tested accuracy is 95.15%. In our tests on real Sri Lankan CVs it had never seen before, that is the share of the details it checks that it found: email addresses, phone numbers, section headings and the dates of each job. Employer software (ATS) differs from one employer to the next, so no checker can promise what one system will do. When we are not sure about a finding, the report says so and does not lower your score. Press Parsed CV Preview to see exactly what was read, and tell us if we got something wrong.
