Frequently asked questions

Short answers for job seekers and for employers. If yours is not here, send us a message.

For job seekers

Is BetterJobs.lk free to use?

Yes. Finding jobs, applying and checking your CV are free. A free account lets you save jobs, upload your CV and apply on the site.

A genuine employer never asks you for money to apply, to be shortlisted, or for training, a visa or a deposit. The one exception is a government examination fee, paid only as its Gazette notice says.

If an advert asks you for money any other way, report it and we look at it first.

Do I need an account to apply?

It depends on the job. Look at the apply button on the job page.

  • How to apply: you do not need an account. Follow the instructions in the advert. They may send you to the employer's own website, email address or phone number. What you send there never passes through us.
  • Apply via BetterJobs Profile: you need an account, and you need to verify your email address first. The account is free.

How do I apply for a job?

Open the job and press the apply button near the top of the page. What happens next depends on the button.

  • Apply via BetterJobs Profile: sign in or create an account. Choose a CV and add a cover note if you want to. Both are optional. Then press Submit Application. Your application goes to the employer, who handles it under their own rules. We email you a confirmation, and you can follow your applications under Applications in My Account.
  • How to apply: read the instructions in the advert and do what they say.

An application is not a job offer, and we cannot promise you a reply. Employers decide whom they interview and hire.

How does the CV checker work?

The CV checker (AI CV Check in the menu) is free, and you do not need an account. Upload your CV as a PDF.

You get a score out of 100. It shows what is good, what is missing and what to fix first.

The score comes from our own rules. Our AI, BetterJobs AI, writes the advice in your report.

It is guidance, not a guarantee. A high score does not mean you will be hired, and a low one does not mean you will not be.

What happens to my CV?

We keep your CV so we can check it and match you to jobs, whether or not you are signed in.

A CV checked with the CV checker is kept for two years from the check and then deleted automatically. You can ask for yours to be deleted sooner.

We never sell your CV. An employer sees it only when you apply for their job.

Our AI never sees your CV file or who you are. It reads a summary of what the CV says, such as jobs, skills and qualifications, with your name, email address, phone number, address and links taken out.

Checking a CV does not sign you up for email.

Our Privacy Policy explains what we keep, why, and who sees it.

How do I delete my CV or my account?

  • A CV in your account: open My Account, then My CVs. Press the delete button (the bin) on the CV and confirm.
  • Your account: open My Account, then Profile. Use Delete my account at the bottom of the page.
  • A CV you did not upload while signed in: send us a message and we will delete it.

What we keep after you delete your account, and how to have that erased as well, is in our Privacy Policy.

How do job alerts work?

A job alert emails you new jobs that match what you choose. You do not need an account.

  • Go to the end of the job list. The form there is headed Still looking for the right job?
  • Choose at least a category or a location. You can also choose a job type, a work mode and keywords.
  • Choose how often: daily or weekly. Type your email address and press Email me these jobs.
  • We email you a link. Open it to turn the alert on.

Every alert email has links to change or stop the alert. If you have an account, your alerts are also listed under Job alerts in My Account.

What do "Verified", "Verified employer", "Reviewing" and "Promoted" mean?

Verified is a mark on one advert, not on the whole employer. An administrator can set it. The employer's own job form cannot. Verified is not a promise that the employer will interview or hire you.

A company marked Verified employer has shown us it controls the company's own email domain, or an admin has checked a document.

An advert marked Reviewing is one we are looking at again. It stays on the site while we do. A Reviewing advert has not been shown to be false, and it has not been shown to be right either. Be careful with personal details until it is cleared.

A Promoted advert has paid for a more visible position. Payment does not make it Verified.

What does "Shared from a public notice" mean?

We also list vacancies we find in public notices, such as an employer's own post on social media or a flyer shared in public groups. We mark those adverts Shared from a public notice.

The employer did not place the advert here. We send you to the contact in the notice, and we do not receive your application.

A shared advert is Verified only when an administrator has confirmed the vacancy with the employer. Check who you are dealing with before sharing personal details.

We tell the employer where we can. The employer can take the advert over or ask us to remove it, and we take it down as soon as we read the message, normally the same day.

How do I report a fake job, or one that asks for money?

Open the job and press Report this job. Choose what is wrong, give your name and email address, and send the report. We email you a link to confirm your address. Nothing is done about a report until you confirm it.

You can also use our contact form. Send the link to the job if you have it. We look at reports about fake jobs first.

If an advert uses your company's name without permission, write from your company's email address if you have one.

For employers

Is it free to post a job?

Yes. Posting a job is free, with or without an account.

Paid placement is separate. It is marked Promoted, and paying never makes an advert Verified. To ask for it, use your employer dashboard or contact us.

How do I post a job?

There are two ways. Either way, the job is checked before it goes live.

  • Without an account: open Post a Job, fill in the form and send it. You can add a job poster. When we approve the job, we email you a link to move it into an employer account.
  • With an employer account: create a free account and verify your email address. Then press Post a job in Manage jobs. The job and its applicants are in your account.

By submitting, you confirm you may post the job for the company named, and you agree to the Terms. Section 6 says what employers promise.

How is a job checked before it goes live?

Every new job is checked before it appears on the site. A new job starts as Pending and stays out of public job search until an administrator approves it.

We read it for obvious problems. That review does not confirm that the person who posted it speaks for the company named.

We may edit, reject or remove any job, even one that has been paid for, if it is misleading, discriminatory, a scam, or asks candidates for money.

Read how we keep ghost jobs out.

How do I become a verified employer?

A company is marked Verified employer when it has shown us it controls its own email domain.

Create an employer account and verify your email address. In Company profile, add your company website. Your verified email address must be on the same domain as the website. A free email address such as Gmail does not count.

If you change the website to another domain later, the label is removed until your email address matches it.

How do I claim a company page, or a job shared from a public notice?

If we list your vacancy from a public notice, we may email the contact address in that notice once. The email tells you how to take the advert over or have it removed.

To take it over, open the link in the email and choose a password. The advert is then yours: you can close it and see who applied. The link works once and for 30 days. You can also reply from your company's email address.

To have it removed, reply with the word remove or write to us. We take it down as soon as we read the message, normally the same day.

A company page that nobody has claimed says so. It carries the link "Work there? Claim this page". The link opens our contact form with the company named, so you can send us your request.

How do I see who applied?

Sign in to your employer account and open Applications. You can read each cover note and download each CV.

Mark each applicant Reviewed, Shortlisted, Rejected or Hired. We email the candidate when their status changes.

Applications made on the site reach only employer accounts. If you posted a job without an account, we email you a link to move it into one once we approve the job.

People who apply by the email address or phone number in your advert contact you directly, not through the site.

How do I close or edit a job?

Sign in, open Manage jobs and find the job.

  • Waiting for approval: press Edit and change what you need.
  • Approved: its details can no longer be changed in your account. Press Change status to set it to Draft, Active or Closed. Close it when the vacancy is filled.
  • If something in an approved job needs correcting, contact us.

A job closes by itself on its closing date. Jobs expire 14 days after posting unless you set another date.
